Happy 4th of July from myself and my ancestor, Edward Richards. Richards was a private and later drummer in the 12th Virginia Regiment (an infantry regiment). He fought at the Battle of Monmouth (1778) as part of the consolidated 4th-8th-12th Virginia Regiment. His regiment was part of Scott’s Brigade, which was part of the American vanguard in that battle and saw heavy combat.
Washington at Monmouth, where he is reported to have used a bit of colorful language when dressing down General Lee after Lee’s disastrous command of the American Advanced Corps.
